English

This term we will be looking at a book entitled 'Rain Player' by David Wisniewski. This book is based in the ancient civilisation of the Mayans which links in with our History topic of Mayans and our Geography topic of Mexico.

We will be using  texts to deliver the Year 6 English objectives, whilst covering a range of genres including biographies, short stories, recounts, explanations, descriptions, non chronological reports and comparisons.

What can you do to help?

It would be great if you could look at examples of the above styles of writing with your children. You might like to discuss what makes a piece of writing exciting or moving. You could identify features and look at how that text type is set out. Most importantly though, if your child is doing any writing at home, it is crucial that it always makes sense and that their punctuation is perfect. Ask your child about the Year 6 non-negotiables...you can see these if you open the file.

Handwriting

This year we have introduced cursive handwriting across the school. In order to meet the expected standard for Year 6, your child must join up. If you google 'cursive handwriting sheets', you should find lots of things to support your child.

Spelling

The National Curriculum provides all schools with a set list of spellings for children to learn. In addition, we also practise spelling patterns and develop word banks which follow the same rules. Please see the attachments below.
