PE and Sports Funding

Sport & Sport Funding

At Gainsborough we want every child to be healthy and fit and have the opportunity to participate in sport and PE so that they are physically confident. This is achieved through positive teaching and learning experiences at all levels and for all children.

PE and sport is led by the PE subject leader and supported by all members of staff.

Our PE lessons cover all areas of the National curriculum, including; games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor activities and athletics.

PE and Sport Premium

PE and Sport Premium for Primary schools Statement Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6.

Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil = £19,550

Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities to offer their pupils, but are free to choose the best way of using the money.

Examples of how to use the funding:

 - hire specialist PE teachers

 - hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers

 - provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport

 - support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs

 - run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games

 - run sports activities with other schools.

At Gainsborough, our Y3 children have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons.

Specialist Coaching - Sportscape

We take sport at Gainsborough very seriously and each week we are joined by a specialist coach who works with our children in several of our classes. We have worked closely with Sportscape to provide a well structured timetable that will ensure a great depth of coverage across all curriculm areas. Sportscape provide well differentiated lessons which allows children of all abilities to access them. Each lesson focuses on a specific skill that the children need to aquire, this is then put into a game situation.

Sportscape also offer a wide range of after school sport clubs - open to all children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 - regardless of their ability. A variety of sports are made available so that children have a selection of choices to choose from.

Due to the success of last years programme, we are continuing to invest into Beth Tweddle's gymnastics company, 'Total Gymnastics'. Year 2 receive specialist gymnastics coaching each week.

Having these specialist teachers in not only provides quality teaching for the children, but it also provides CPD for teaching staff.

Golden Mile

To improve fitness levels and stamina all pupils from Year 2 to 6 take part in the Golden Mile where they work hard to improve on their 'Personal Best'.

Gainsborough Sports Clubs

Sport afterschool clubs have grown at Gainsborough and are becoming more and more popular. Sportscape offer a variety of different sport clubs: such as athletics, football, netball, cricket and rounders.

As part of our Golden time, we also incorporate several sporting activities-which again help our children to achieve their two hours of physical activity weekly. Here we have provided; circuit training, basketball, football, benchball, fun games, rounders and cricket. These activities are always very popular with the children.

Each year we take part in several different sporting events, as we are keen for our children to be highly motivated and to become young sporting leaders. We take part in the Autumn Year 5 and 6 football league and the Timperley shield. We also take part in the Crewe and Nantwich Indoor athletics and Town Sports.

Our girls' football team has continued to grow, having taken part in two Crewe football tournaments. We are also keen to take part in a separate league and to arrange friendlies with other local schools.

Football is a popular sport in our school, and we therefore take part in a Year 3 and 4 boys football tournament too; this gets our children ready for when they start the league in Year 5 and 6. They love it!

Futsal is a different form of football, here the rules are slightly different. The games are 5 aside and are played inside with a smaller football. Futsal is a fast paced game, and it therefore helps our children to improve their footballing skills and footwork. We are continuing to enter our teams into small sided futsal competitions.

For swimming, we take part in the Crewe annual swimming gala, in which we are becoming more successful in each year.

This year, we have also participated in several other sporting competitions. These include; basketball, dodgeball, high 5 netball, cricket and cross country. We are hoping to further expand this by entering into local tag rubgy tournaments.

Inclusive sports - here at Gainsborough we view sport as sport for all. We believe that everybody should have the opportunity to take part in sport. Inclusive sports allows our special educational needs children to take part in a variety of different activities at South Cheshire College. We take part in this three times a year.

This year we introduced a 'dance week' - here all children throughout the school took part in a dance workshop. Some year groups danced to hip hop, whilst others danced to Brazilian and music from other countries. At the end of their dance workshop our children completed a perfromance for their parents - to showcase their new learnt skills and moves!

Pupil Voice/ Match Reports

It is important that our children not only enjoy the sports that they are taking part in, but they have the opportunity to reflect and share their experiences with everybody else in the school. We encourage our children to share their successes and to be proud of what they have achieved.

In school, we allow our children to prepare match reports which they read out in Cup Winners assembly, and we also post all successes on our weekly newsletter and website. We also ensure that our children enjoy their PE lessons at school, by completing pupil voice monitoring sheets and conducting staff questionnaires.
