PE and Sports

Sport & Sport Funding

All children at Gainsborough have an average of two PE sessions per week. This can be achieved in a variety of different ways. All children, from Y1-6, will have one main lesson of PE each week, and the other hour is made up from completing golden mile and wake up shake up. Our PE lessons cover all areas of the National curriculum, including; games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor activities and athletics.

PE and Sport Premium

PE and Sport Premium for Primary schools Statement Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6.

Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £500 per pupil.

Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £8,000 and an additional payment of £5 per pupil.

Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities to offer their pupils, but are free to choose the best way of using the money.

Examples of how to use the funding:

 - hire specialist PE teachers

 - hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers

 - provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport

 - support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs

 - run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games

 - run sports activities with other schools.

At Gainsborough, our Y3 children have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons. Here, they are able to achieve different levels and awards. We also offer catch up swimming lessons for all children in Y6, to ensure they can swim the recommended length of 25m independently.

Specialist Coaching

We take sport at Gainsborough very seriously; every week we hire a specialist athletics coach to come in and teach Years 3-6. They are taught the correct running tecnhinques, how to throw the javelin, how to use the high jump and long jump. Our athletics coach also has the time to work, in smaller groups, with our gifted and talented children. Their progress is monitored each half term, and is recorded.

This year, we are also proudly investing into Beth Tweddle's gymnastics company - here a specialist gymnastics coach will come in a work with different year groups, once a week and will offer an afterschool club.

Having these specialist teachers in not only provides quality teaching for the children, but it also provides CPD for teaching staff.

Gainsborough Sports Clubs

Sport afterschool clubs have grown at Gainsborough and are becoming more and more popular. Last year we offered athletics, football, futsal, high 5 netball, rounders, Irish dancing and yoga. These sports, and more will be on offer again this academic year and we encourage children to actively take part.

As part of our Golden time, we also incorporate several sporting activities-which again helps our children to achieve their two hours of sport weekly. Here we have provided; circuit training, basketball, football, benchball, fun games, rounders and cricket. These activities are always full on a weekly basis.

Each year we take part in several different events, as we are keen for our children to be highly motivated and to become young sporting leaders. We take part in the Autumn Year 5 and 6 football league and the Timperley shield. We also take part in the Crewe and Nantwich Indoor athletics and Town Sports.

More recently, we have introduced a girls football team, and we are very proud to be entering our first team into a Crewe football tournament. We are also keen to take part in a separate league and to arrange friendlies with other local schools.

Football is a popular sport in our school, and we therefore take part in a Year 3 and 4 boys football tournament too, this gets our children ready for when they start the league in Year 5 and 6. They love it!

Futsal is a different form of football, here the rules are slightly different. The games are 5 aside and are played inside with a smaller football. Futsal is a fast paced game, and it therefore helps our children to improve with their footballing skills and footwork. We recently took part in our very first futsol competition and we thoroughly enojoyed it, winning one game and drawing three.

For swimming, to take part in the Crewe annual swimming gala, which we are becoming more successful in each year. We have recently moved our lessons to a new swimming baths called the Crewe Lifestyle Centre. Here, they provide a larger pool and better facility area.

This year, we introduced High Five Netball, we had a high interest from both boys and girls. We hired a local and successful netball coach to come in after school, whereby they learnt all the basics, rules and skills of the game. We also played friendlies against local schools and took part in a tournament which our children loved.

Inclusive sports - here at Gainsborough we view sport as sport for all. We believe that everybody should have the opportunity to take part in sport. Inclusive sports allows our special educational needs children to take part in a variety of different activities at South Cheshire College. We take part in this three times a year.

Pupil Voice/ Match Reports

It is important that our children not only enjoy the sports that they are taking part in, but they have the opportunity to reflect and share their experiences with everybody else in the school. We encourage our children to share their successess and to be proud of what they have achieved.

In school, we allow our children to prepare match reports which they read out in Cup Winners assembly, and we also post all successess on our weekly newsletter and website. We also ensure that our children enjoy their PE lessons at school, by completing pupil voice monitoring sheets and conducting staff questionnaires.
