Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

Every child is valued and cared for at Gainsborough. We encourage all children to respect each other, learning that everyone is special in their own way and that we value the good in each of us. They learn to have good manners, share, take turns, hear each others’ point of view and understand the need for rules and conventions within school.

In accordance with the DfE  ‘Promoting fundamental British values as part of SMSC in schools’ all maintained schools must meet the requirements set out in section 78 of the Education Act 2002 and promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils. Through ensuring pupils’ SMSC development, at Gainsborough we also demonstrate that we are actively promoting fundamental British values.

SMSC and British values underpin all that we do at Gainsborough from preparing the pupils to deal with their feelings and emotions, and how they look after themselves and help others. We also ensure the pupils develop a strong sense of what is right and support them in dealing with consequences when poor choices are made. Through a cross-curricular approach the children also gain experience of what democracy is, develop a respect for the basis on which the law is made and for public institutions and services. Respect, tolerance and harmony are the key and the basis for how we work together.

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance. In addition to this our pupils are taught to understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

We welcome many visitors into school who enrich our British Values and PSHE curriculum.
