Year 6 2025 – 2026

This term we are learning about the Maya in both our history and English lessons and evolution and inheritance are the focus for our learning in science. For further information on the Year 6 curriculum, please visit our curriculum brochure below.

We have recently returned from our residential visit to, Robinwood. We had an amazing time climbing, rafting, flying through the air on the zip wire and much, much more! To see the pictures of our adventures. visit the school’s Instagram and Facebook pages!

Here are a few helpful facts that you might find useful:

  • Homework is given out on a Tuesday and is due in on the following Monday.
  • Spelling tests are every Friday – you can practise your spellings by visiting Spelling Shed and logging into your user area. If you are using a device with a camera, you can easily access it using your persoanlised QR code.
  • Continue to visit Times Table Rockstars regularly to ensure your tables recall is both rapid and accurate.
  • PE is every Tuesday. However, PE kits should be in school everyday in case of timetable changes.  This kit should be our school PE kit.
  • Reading records should be in school everyday with a parent signature to show that a pupil has read at home at least 5 times a week.
  • We expect Year 6 to set the standard for school uniform and be well presented at all times. Trainers are not allowed.
  • Please ensure your child has a refillable water bottle with them each day.

If you have any questions about any aspect of school then please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 6 team.

The children in Y6 will be taking their end of Key Stage 2 SATs tests in May. The SATs are a statutory requirement and test the knowledge built up in school over the last four years. The year 6 curriculum  builds upon previous knowledge, skills and understanding developed throughout the school.

You will also find a short video below which was produced by Michael Tidd, who writes an education blog and teaches in KS2. This video highlights how the tests were structured as well as some of the important information related to the changes. Please have a look.

We have P.E. every TUESDAY and it is important that pupils have their full kit in school at all times.

Kit should include:

  • A plain white or pale blue T-shirt
  • Blue or black shorts
  • Trainers or pumps
  • In colder weather, jogging bottoms or leggings are also acceptable if P.E. is taking place outside.
  • Football kits are not permitted

Children must remove earrings and watches for lessons.

Year 6, we give out homework every TUESDAY and ask that it is back in school on the following MONDAY. Homework normally conists of: spellings, SPaG, maths and reading. These will be in the form of specific pages within the CGP SAT Question Books related to our current learning. Each week the homework pages are explained however, if a child is struggling with the homework please encourage them to talk to a member of the year 6 team and we can give them support to help with their understanding.

In addition to the Maths and English homework we have a weekly spelling test every Friday. The spellings to be learnt at home that week will be available on Spelling Shed each Friday and will reinforce the spelling rule taught that week in school. If you have any difficulty accessing Spelling Shed, please let a member of the Year 6 team know.

Log-ins for our online learning sites can be found at the back of your child’s reading diary.

We have added some useful vocabulary mats for you to use at home.

These relate to the topics that we are learning or have learnt in class this year.

As a school we pay for every child to have access to Spelling Shed, Times Tables Rock Stars and Purple Mash.  Each child has their own login and password which has been sent home in their reading diary.  These are absolutely brilliant programs which have different levels of difficulty to support all areas of the curriculum.

Of course, there are many additional apps and websites out there which can support your child’s learning such as:

Google – YouTube Maths Mansion too for some great videos to watch!
