Year 2 2025 – 2026

Welcome to Year 2

Thank you for visiting our Year 2 page. We welcome the opportunity to work alongside you and help your child to reach their full potential. We always ensure that your child is safe, happy and learning in a fun and engaging way.

We understand that you are keen to help your child at home and we hope that you find the following information useful.

To support your child’s reading, we would like to encourage you to read with your child and talk about the book as much as possible. Children will recieve a book matching the level they are working at. The children will need to immerse themselves within their books, gaining a full understanding of the text and understanding why authors have used particular words for impact. For this reason, they may have their book for up to a week to help boost their word accuracy and fluency.

During this term we will be concentrating on spelling the common exception words.

We strive to provide the children with a happy learning experience. If you have any concerns about your child, please feel free to pop in at the end of the day or phone the office for an appointment.

Thanks

Year 2 team

Attendance

At Gainsborough, we work hard to help your child reach to reach their full potential. In return, we ask that your child attends school everyday, unless they are very poorly or there are extenuating circumstances.

Times of day:

8.45am start
3.15pm  end

Children arriving on time are greeted at the gate by a member of staff, giving you the oppurtunity to pass on any essential information about your child. Children arriving after 8:50am must sign in via the school office and will be marked as late.

PE

PE is on Monday and Wednesday.

PE kit must have the pupil’s name on each item and be in line with our school PE kit uniform as listed on our PE page.
Please ensure PE kits are in school at the start of each half term. These will then be sent home at half term for washing. PE is statutory and we will contact you to bring their kit in, if necessary.

Jewellery

For safety reasons, jewellery is NOT permitted to be worn in school. If your child wears earrings, then these must be small stud earring only and taken out on PE days. If they are left in we are required to cover them with hypoallergenic tape for safety.

Homework

Reading

We ask that you read with your child at least four times per week and the children who achieve this will be rewarded in school.

Reading develops vocabulary and experience. It also opens up the rest of the curriculum. More importantly reading is a lovely time to spend with your child as it opens their world and imaginations.

A reading chart is kept to track how often they read and diaries are checked daily. If you find difficulty supporting your child at home with their reading, we can work together to find a solution.

Spellings, maths, creative home work and more…

Your child will have a homework book. Homework books will  be given out on a Friday and collected in the following Wednesday. This gives us time to mark the work, share with your child and prepare new homework.

Weekly spellings will be given. Look, Read, Cover, Write and Check – is a good strategy for learning new words. Writing them down and spelling them out helps to commit them to memory. Daily practice is needed. It will also help your child to put spellings into sentences. This supports their understanding and meaning of the words. Your child will have a spelling test each Friday.
