Year 1 2025 – 2026

Welcome to Reception

Thank you for visiting our Y1 page. We would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that we will care for and teach your child in the very best way we know how. We will ensure that your child is safe, happy and learning in a fun and engaging way.

We understand that you are keen to help your child at home and we hope that you find the following information useful.

Phonics will play a crucial role in helping your child to learn to read and spell. We follow the Read, Write, Inc Phonics and reading programme. Click here to find out more about what you can do to help.

To support your child’s reading we would like to encourage you to read as much as possible. Children will recieve a Read, Write, Inc book matching the group they are working in. They need to become storytellers with their books, which mean that they may have the book for up to a week but this will boost their confidence and make them better readers, also allowing them to gain a greater understanding of the text.

During this term we will be concentrating on forming our letters correctly. Please see our Cursive handwriting sheet to support your child with this. We will also be learning our year one Spellings.

We would like invite you to share any interesting facts, news or exciting events with us in your homework book. We love to see photos, leaflets, maps etc of where your family have been or what your children have been doing.

We are looking forward to sharing your childs learning with you.

Please feel free to speak to us about anything.

Thanks

Year 1 team

Year One

Homework

Homework is  given out on Friday and is collected on the following Tuesday. We invite you to share any news or exciting events in your homework book. We love to see photos, leaflets, maps etc of where the children have been or what they have been doing.

Reading

Your child will be expected to read at home four times per week. Please could you sign your child’s reading record every time you read with them. You may also wish to use this diary as a form of communication with us.

Please encourage your child to have their reading record in their hands as they enter school so that they can put it straight into the box. The children are working towards reading awards. You will see the names of children in the class window who have achieved four reads in the week. The children are very proud of these achievements.
